Courtney's Story

Calving the cow

One normal Friday night dad had to go and check on the calving so I asked Dad if I could come, ‘’of course ‘’ Dad said. Dad said if that cow hadn’t calved yet we’d have to calve it. We arrived in the paddock and saw that the cow hadn’t calved. So we took the Friesian Cross Breed cow to the shed. I had to go behind the cow and chase her up to the shed so Dad could go past and shut the gates because Dad thought she had already calved.

As we arrived at the cow shed we put her in this calving area at the cow shed. So we put the cows head in this head bale to hold her still. Finally Dad stuck his hand through the cow’s bottom and grabbed the calves foot. Dad got ready to pull the calf out. Dad used all his strength to pull the calf out, ‘’it’s a tough one ‘’ Dad said. All of a sudden the cow was in very big pain ‘’ push girl push’’ Dad said and finally the calf came out. As it came out the cow collapsed and all of this blood came out. Soon we gave the calf to the cow, it was a girl but it wasn’t a keeper. The cow licked the calf clean and finally we got the cow up and put them both in the paddock. I love going on the farm I said to Dad. So we went back home on the motor bike and went to bed.
